This class begins the basic sequence in Ancient Greek, primarily as the language of Classical and Biblical texts. This semester you will read a range of simple texts from antiquity as you work through the basic grammar of the language. This ability provides the springboard for you to explore one of the most powerful, captivating, and enduring languages in the world. It is a most excellent journey, not easy, but one which is often quite fun and exciting.
Required Text: Anne Groton, From Alpha to Omega: A Beginning Course in Classical Greek (4th edition). ISBN 9781585103911.
Grading:
- 10%—Homework and Participation: You are required not only to show up to every class but also to be prepared to contribute. Being prepared means that you have read through the homework for the day and written down any words that you did not know, but not having written out a translation. If you are not in class, you cannot participate.
- 30%—Quizzes: There will be 13 quizzes this term, each of which will take 10–15 minutes at the beginning of class; if you are late to class that day, you will have less time for your quiz. You cannot leave class after taking a quiz. The 2 lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Quizzes will cover vocabulary, grammar, and translation. No make-ups will be allowed except for an absence excused along university guidelines.
- 45%—Tests: There will be 3 tests, each worth 15% of the term grade. Each test will focus primarily on the material from the most recent five chapters but will necessarily also be cumulative. Each test will include two new, previously unseen readings based on the characters and situations in the book, which you will be required to translate and about which you will answer grammatical questions.
- 15%—Final Exam: The final exam will be the same length and format as the in-class exams. The final exam will necessarily be cumulative in terms of the vocabulary and grammar used, but will focus primarily on the material since the third and final in-class exam. No make-ups will be allowed except for an absence excused along university guidelines.
